Get to Know: Lily-Lark
Tell us about your brand and your business model.
Lily-Lark is a line of UV sun parasols that are equal part sun protection and fashion accessory. They’re handmade in Thailand by villagers in a small community on the perimeter of Chiang Mai.
The traditional Asian bamboo frame is paired with a fabric canopy printed with contemporary fine art. We offer 13 unique prints this season in two sizes, each with a matching carrying case.
We sell wholesale to boutiques and resorts as well as through other online merchants. We also sell directly to consumers from our website.
What drove you to start your own label? And what have you enjoyed the most so far?
I started developing Lily-Lark several years ago when I worked in advertising as an Art Director/Creative Director in New York City.
As a successful career woman in an industry that values youth and beauty, I was afraid to look my age. I always wanted to walk around with an umbrella to protect my skin from the sun. When I started noticing other women in Manhattan beginning to do that, I was happy, but also found most umbrellas uninspired and purely functional.
While strolling around a sculpture garden one day with my aunt, noticing her lovely Asian parasol, I had my aha moment! I was going to make something wonderful that would be an elegant hybrid of the traditional bamboo parasol and a beautiful accessory. And Lily-Lark was the result of this process.
The most enjoyable part of creating my own label has been working to make something that satisfied my own sensibilities, tastes, and judgement. I spent years in marketing, crafting my work to meet other Creative Directors’ points of view and I was ready to bring forth my own vision for the product and the company.
What are one or two big goals you’re focusing on in the next 6 months?
Right now, it’s all about building my customer base. After some stops and starts in 2016, I am fully launching the product in 2017.
I’m slowly getting my foot in the door with a number of exciting resorts and boutiques and possible overseas partnerships. This product is slightly ahead of its time in the US, so I’m looking for my market while hanging in ’til the trend catches up with us!

The brand is best described as "painted stories on scarves." They are my original paintings that are digitally printed on silk and cotton scarves. It's our goal to provide a great product and the scarves are printed using organic dyes and have hand rolled edges. We sell directly to consumers via our website, trunk shows, and boutiques.
