Get To Know: Shana Luther Handbags
Tell us about your brand and your business model.
I design modern leather goods and accessories. When I began my brand several years ago, all of my designs were small-batch manufactured at a local handbag production company. I loved working with the small factory and seeing my designs come to life, but I certainly saw a shift in the marketplace. I noticed a need for more wallet-friendly goods at that time and as a result I became more hands on and started something new within my brand. Now my brand has two collections- BKLYN which is handcrafted by myself and a small trusted team, and NYC which is my locally manufactured line of bags. Needless to say, my business model took a shift, but I think it’s important to listen to your customers and find flexibility where you can. I’m thrilled with where things are at this point in my business.
What drove you to start your own label? And what have you enjoyed the most so far?
I absolutely love accessories and I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands. When I noticed a lack of quality, American made, leather bags I it as an opportunity to becoming my own brand. I worked for handbag labels before, so I had experience working with manufactures and tanneries. There are many things I enjoy about having my own brand (and many difficulties), but right now the thing I enjoy the most is making my own schedule. I have a toddler now and having quality time with her is definitely a must for each and every day. Finding that balance between baby and brand has been a challenge, but it’s so rewarding.
What are one or two big goals you’re focusing on in the next 6 months?
I know this is a very hot topic among designers, but I’m trying to figure out the trade show circuit. I’ve been researching endlessly and have yet to come to a conclusion but am really trying to focus on expanding my wholesale reach. That and building up as much stock as possible for holiday- we will be showing our collection at a few locations throughout the holidays so having plenty of goods is crucial!

The Sarmiento Collection was born from a desire to create handbags that were exotic yet elegant, to offer a luxury accessory but avoid high priced mark-ups. Our design process involves experimenting with classic silhouettes; equally focused on functionality as much as a striking aesthetic.
