Get To Know: Grammar
Tell us about your brand and your business model.
Grammar is a story of quality and consciousness, offering a minimalist work uniform consisting of structural, stylish separates made with sustainable materials. This first collection offers five beautifully tailored silhouettes constructed by hand in NYC’s legendary Garment District, made from 100% sustainable organic cotton poplin ethically produced in India. Grammar’s direct to consumer business model reduces costs, so the luxury-level quality of the pieces is attainable. Grammar will collect pre-orders on small capsules of 3-5 pieces that drop every 2-3 months, with inventory available 6-8 weeks later.
What drove you to start your own label? And what have you enjoyed the most so far?
I have always wanted to start my own sustainable fashion company. The catalyst to finally do it was in January 2016 when I was starting my last semester of business school and there was a fire in my apartment building. I lost my carefully curated wardrobe, and had a hard time finding items to replace the ones I’d lost. I thought: “There really isn’t a brand out there for me.” – classic, timeless pieces that are unique, high quality, and well designed, and with a story and ethos that I can get behind. Then I thought: “I’ve always wanted to create this business. If not now, when?” That’s when I started thinking about it in earnest. I’ve been working on Grammar full-time since August 2016.
I enjoy being true to myself and my purpose. This is what I’ve always wanted to do, and it feels so good to be finally doing it. I’m so excited to share Grammar with the world.
What are one or two big goals you’re focusing on in the next 6 months?
I launched on Kickstarter September 5th, so that has been a huge goal! I want to exceed my funding goal, then get to production. I’m planning to have a launch party in early December when I have inventory. I’ll have two more drops of small capsules including more white shirts, and will introduce black pants to the collection.
